Ramarley Graham, 18, was shot and killed by a NYPD officer in the Bronx on Thursday afternoon after running into his home as undercover officers pursued him. He’s the third person the NYPD have killed in a week. According to the police spokesperson, he was unarmed. (emphasis mine)
Three people in a week? Really?
I wonder if it occurs to people that this kind of thing is the logical extension of telling local law enforcement that they are fighting a “War on Drugs.” If it’s a war, then police officers are soldiers and ordinary people in America are enemies. And this is how soldiers handle enemies.
Except, the largely black and brown bodies that are caught up in this war are not enemies at all. They are actual U.S. citizens with rights.
It’s long past time to end this “war” and re-establish the public servant/citizen relationship between law enforcement and the American people.
